Andrew Haythornthwaite, in collaboration with his partner, Shai Akram, co-founded Studio Alt Shift. In addition to his contributions to Studio Alt Shift, Andrew actively engages in the development and exploration of various making processes associated with experimental objects.
Drawing inspiration from observations in nature and employing straightforward mechanical processes, Andrew incorporates these elements significantly into his conceptual works and commissioned projects.

Andrew Haythornthwaite originates from New Zealand, where he was raised in a rural environment. He completed his bachelor's degree in Industrial Design at Massey University in Wellington before embarking on a new endeavor in Hong Kong with his elder brother, David. Collaboratively, they founded a Design Studio that specialized in product design, catering specifically to the German brand, Knirps
After spending two years in Hong Kong, Andrew relocated to London, where he enrolled in a master's program at the esteemed Royal College of Art under the guidance of Professor Ron Arad.
Following his graduation, Andrew decided to make London his base and co-founded Studio Alt Shift with his partner, Shai Akram. Their focus primarily revolves around designing spatial environments, spanning from interiors to exhibition spaces. In addition to their work at Studio Alt Shift, Andrew channels his creative energy into personal explorations, often yielding playful and abstract designs and objects.
Andrew's notable works have earned a place in the permanent collections of esteemed institutions such as the Design Museum in London and MoMA in New York. Furthermore, his creations have received extensive international recognition through widespread publications. Andrew also finds fulfillment in sharing his knowledge and expertise as a lecturer for undergraduate and master's programs at institutions, including the University of the Arts London and the Royal College of Art.
